Inaugural Diversity Day Conference
On July 25, 2015, HLSA of Los Angles hosted our Inaugural Diversity Day Conference on diversity issues in the legal industry.
The conference began with a presentation by Jerry Kang ’93, Professor of Law and Asian Studies and the inaugural Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at UCLA, on “Implicit Bias.” The conference also featured a lively discussion with a panel of experts on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal industry, in both private practice and legal education, and networking opportunities. Speakers on the panel included Cristina Hernandez ’95, Senior Consultant and Vice President of Business Development at Verna Myers Consulting Group LLC, a Diversity Management Consulting firm; Kevin Minnick, an associate in Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP’s Los Angeles office; Erica Moore-Burton, a Los Angeles-based attorney and award winning legal recruiter at Round Hill Search; Marcy Peek ’97, attorney, law professor, business development professional, and the founder of Peel Consulting, a Los Angeles-based law firm specializing in business and contract law; and Tony Tolbert ’86, Director of Learning Environment & Academic Affairs for UCLA School of Law and Adjunct Faculty director of UCLA’s Street Law clinic. The conference concluded with a lunch at which Dean Susan Westerberg Prager of Southwestern Law School delivered remarks.
